The Max Strategy. The Max Strategy: How
A Buisnessman Got Stuck At An Airport
I think it’s my new favorite little book. I actually
surprised myself because I read all of it in 3 hours on a Saturday night. I’m a
graduate student, Saturday nights are premium for doing anything but readying
or staying home……..that’s how good it is.
How I got my hands on it?
A week before, myself and some friends went out to a Club/Bar called
Hong Kong by Harvard, it was a nice place with three floors. Ground level was
the restaurant, next the bar and at the top the dance floor.
At the end of a
thrilling night, I grab what I think is my coat and take off home. I never
notice this was not my coast and that my prescription glasses where not in the
pocket. I’m thinking okay, maybe they are still at Hong Kong?
Monday bright and early I show up to Hong Kong only to have
the equivalent of April fools. The ground level restaurant is open but it’s not
that same owner as the 2nd and 3rd floor, the nice Asian man tells
me they open at 5pm.I’m thinking, I have class at 6pm, I’ll come get my stuff
and make it to class.
Hours later, I find myself siting down at the ground level,
restaurant, of Hong Kong waiting for the next levels to open. All this is
happening while the Sox are leading the Yankees, but I start to notice: the
atmosphere, crowd level, lighting etc.
It’s so different from what I had seen last Saturday night,
a place full of people working, eating, dancing, the place was alive. But not
on a Monday at 5pm. I’m wondering how is that this place makes money; I assume it’s
only during the weekend when there is more alcohol than people.
No glasses where found, too bad I need to new ones.
In class (internet marketing) that Monday @ 6pm the
instructor shows the class a video and a website constructed and maintained my
Ling called LingsCar.com. This website is very different from what anyone is
currently doing to sell cars and thus very successful.
All this time I’m thinking wow, how could this same concept
apply to the dichotomy I just witnessed at Hong Kong? So I e-mail my instructor
asking how is it that a business likes Hong Kong can have a steady income even
on the week days. Could a LingCars.com approach work for a business in the
physical world? Could it compliment the digital sphere? I had many questions,
but in his reply he mentioned the Purple Cow. Intrigued by the short summary, I
make my way to the Library.
There, tucked in between taller, thicker books I pull out
the tiny purple book. Inwardly I say, “umm I was expecting a cow sized book,
it’s fairly small, I’ll read it immediately. It should make my travel to the
library worthwhile. And since I already glanced at most of the other sections
trying to find this one book I will get another one.” In the visible proximity
to Purple cow there was The Max Strategy. I opened it, looked and said to
myself yeah whatever I’ll take it.
After reading it I now know I was experimenting, making and
monitoring mistakes, embracing problems, asking the right questions, observing
great example of success and applying all this to my personal life. Next for me
it to get a career in marketing and advertising after I graduate in May to
apply what I have read.
